TURFGRASS MAINTENANCE

MOWING

Your private grounds superintendent will cut your bentgrass putting green 3 times a week.  For special occasions, you can request more frequent mowing to increase green speeds.

FERTILIZATION

Custom Golf Construction uses a spoon feeding method of fertilizing.  We use Nature Safe, a natural and organic fertilizer.  USGA specification sand greens, hand in hand with using natural and organic fertilizers, increase microlbial activity in the soil.  High microbial activity reduces thatch in the soil profile which helps inhibit turfgrass disease and reduces water use.  These are great cultural practices for the grass and the environment.

TOPDRESSING

Topdressing is the process of laying down fine sand on growing turf.  Sand helps smooth the putting surface, break down thatch in the soil profile, and provide new growing areas for turfgrass to spread.

VERTI-CUTTING

Verticutting is the process of cutting long vertical grooves into the putting surface with a vertical cutting reel unit.  Turfgrass is a crop.  Like all crops, turfgrass needs to be cultivated.  Once a month, your private grounds superintendent uses a verticut machine to thin out the turfgrass plants.  This will help the health of the plants by reducing thatch and help increase green speed.

CORE AERATION

Because of the dense nature of bentgrass, excessive thatch can accumulate to the point of choking off living plants.  The cultural practice core aeration uses spikes to pull sharp, deep plugs out of the soil profile.  These plugs are removed and the empty aeration holes are filled with fine sand.  The purpose is to help get oxygen down to the roots.  Good roots get oxygen from tiny air pockets in the soil.  Compaction on bentgrass putting greens squeeze out the air and choke the roots.
